Welcome to the website for Washington Township in Logan County. The police section of this website has been created to provide information on the structure and service goals of the police department. My name is Rick Core and I have been your police chief since April 1992. Our police department is very committed to serving the residents of Washington Township.
Our department and the activities we are involved in are in a constant state of change. Most importantly we are adjusting to the changes in criminal activity. There are changes and amendments to the laws we enforce and to the ways the various courts implement the aforementioned changes. Then there are the personnel changes that create a task of trying to maintain adequate staffing. Just in the last few months we have had three officers accept full time positions with other agencies that provide higher wages and benefits that Washington Township cannot provide. Mandatory training is ever evolving to meet the needs of the public we serve. The list of change and adjustment seems endless and I wanted to provide you with a few examples of the changes I was referring to.
At the time of this writing, the Washington Township Police Department consists of seven officers, and one civilian administrative assistant. We take great pride in the service we provide for the residents of Washington Township. We have a very unique relationship with our community. Most city and county law enforcement agencies are funded from monies generated from taxes collected by normal means which accumulate into a general operating fund.
The financial resources that fund The Washington Township Police Department primarily come from the gracious support of the community. This department has a five year renewable one mil levy that represents the greatest portion of our funding. The remainder is from a permanent levy that represents roughly twenty five percent of our budget. Without the support of our residents we would not exist.
Our philosophy is to focus on community policing. Here are some examples of community policing efforts we are involved in every year. We are very active and participate in many events in all of the Indian Lake Schools. Our goal is to build strong relationships with our youth that we hope will have a positive effect on the community for generations to come. We are involved with the neighborhood watch groups in our area as well. We provide training to the schools and churches in Washington Township to create a safer environment for all when attending these facilities. We are actively involved with some of the businesses in the township that request our assistance in creating and establishing their Emergency Response Plans.
I believe a strong police presence in your neighborhood deters crime. Drug problems continue to dominate the calls for service for law enforcement agencies across the state. Your police department has an aggressive approach in dealing with drug offenders in Washington Township. I also believe that if we can minimize the drug activity in our area that all other crime statistics are reduced. The drug element drives the greatest percentage of all the criminal activity in most communities.
It is a privilege and an honor to serve you. I have an open door policy and invite your questions and concerns. We are active on Facebook so feel free to keep up on what we are doing on a daily basis. Together we can strengthen, grow, and preserve our community. Thank you for your interest in the police department and your support.
