Washington Township is governed by four elected officials (three trustees and one fiscal officer). One trustee and the fiscal officer are elected every four years and the two other trustees are elected in the alternate, even-numbered years. Washington Township trustees, along with trustees of other townships its size, are governed by the Ohio Revised Code and thus have a limited authority. In Washington Township your trustees are responsible for the township roads and rights-of-way, for operation and regulating of our locally voted zoning ordinance, for the maintenance and operation of a Police Department, and for the operation and maintenance of two cemetaries and one park.
Sandy Lake Amusement Park opened in Russells Point during the mid 1920's. The park offered many rides and arcades, but the main attraction was the Minnewawa Dance Hall. The hall had room for two bandstands and hundreds of couples. It was not uncommon to have famous musicians like Rudy Vallee Orchestra play or national dance marathon competitions.
After the devastation by fire in 1935, the park was sold and rebuilt, reopening as the Moonlight Terrace Gardens.
Between the mid 50's to early 70's, many setbacks occured, making it difficult for the park to remain open. In 1982, the park was demolished. The only reminder is this bridge seen in the photo.
